If your pond is large, you could line it with cement mortar, like a swimming pool, but most people will use either a preformed plastic pond liners or will construct the pond with a plastic sheet material.

A small pond can use a preformed liner. To use the preformed pond liners you need to dig a hole that is roughly the same shape as the liner itself.

You can dig a hole to form the main pond, and include several different levels to your pond. Line the pond and water fall area with your plastic pond liners, and cover the edges of the plastic liners with rocks to hold it in place.

The simplest type of pond liner for most home owners will be a preformed liner.

Make Your Own Customized Pond with Liners

Executive Summary by: Jonathan Goodman

A majority of large pond liners are made out of polyethylene. To get the right size pond liner, measure the width, length and depth of the pond.

Large pond liners come in a wide price range depending on size. You might need an underlayment when you install your pond liners as it can protect your liner from getting damaged or punctured.

Maintaining your pond liners is an important task. Pond liners, whether they are preformed pond liners or liners that you install to the shape of your pond, can get punctured or sag with all the debris, rocks and other add-ons.

Here are some tips to bear in mind when it comes to pond liners:

  • PVC pond liners can get stiff in very cold climates.
  • If you have fish in your pond, then you need to get the right fish pond liner.
  • It is not mandatory to get an expensive pond liner if you want to rebuild your pond every year or once in two years.

Pond liners are ingenious alternatives compared to the cumbersome process of applying cement or using ponds made of fiberglass.
